Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I join AAFGF?
Professional development, furthering your career, gaining credibility, and networking, networking, networking.

Is membership in AAFGF open to anyone?
Whether advertising is your vocation or avocation, you’re welcome to join. Our members live and work in the Greater Flint area, in Genesee County and the surrounding areas.

Who will I meet when I attend a AAFGF event?
Who won’t you meet? Bad grammar aside, you’ll meet everyone from full-time students and big-time creative directors, to freelance writers, designers and more. Attendance is open to everyone; you don’t have to be an AAFGF member, or even in advertising, to attend.

I’m already a member of an Ad Club, and am moving to the Flint area. Is my membership transferable?
Unfortunately, no it is not. But, we always welcome new members, especially members with experience as members of other Clubs.

How do I volunteer for a committee?
Drop one of our Board Members an e-mail to express your interest.

Do I need to be a member to volunteer?
No, we want involvement from everyone and anyone who is interested in advertising and who wants to get involved with AAFGF.

When does the AAFGF meet?
Monthly professional development luncheon meetings are held September through May, on the fourth Thursday of the month. Exceptions include the month of December to separate from the holiday events later in the month, and February when the ADDY® Awards typically are held. Always check the events calendar first.

I’m a student. How can I get involved in AAFGF?
University of Michigan-Flint students check with the Student Advertising Network, or contact the ad club college connection chair, Dr. Tony McGill for information.

We offer a low student rate to become a member, or you can attend a luncheon meeting at cost to hear the speaker. For events other than luncheons, we offer student discounted rates. Students are always welcome to join a committee, too.

How can I join the AAFGF Board?
Each spring, we mail a call for nominations. Don’t be shy: Nominate yourself. If you choose to nominate someone else, make sure they are ready, willing and able to serve.

How is the AAFGF Board structured?
The Board of Directors shall comprise nine (9) to fifteen (15) members, each being elected by the membership. Additionally, at the Board’s discretion, the immediate past President may serve as an ex-officio Board member with voting rights if he/she is not a Board member. The Board of Directors shall have the authority to adjust the number of directors by offering for election to the Board not less than three (3) and not more than five (5) seats annually.

Members of the Board shall be elected by a majority of the votes cast by the voting membership of the Club. For each member of the Board to be elected, at least two (2) members of the Club shall be nominated.

I think AAFGF members are a good audience for my product.
How can I get their names and addresses?

In order to respect the privacy of our members, we do not sell our list of members for commercial gain. Upon occasion, AAFGF will swap lists with similar organizations. Examples of when our mailing list is shared may be a seminar presented by a professional organization, a presentation by a college communications dept., etc. Each request for mailing list must be submitted in writing and state the reason for wanting the list. The board considers each request and holds the right to grant or reject such requests.

So how can I get my name in front of members?
Sponsor a meeting or an event. Sponsorship packages may include the opportunity to set up a display at a meeting, speak to our members, or placement of ads or logos. Contact the AAFGF Executive Director for details.

Is my sponsorship considered a donation?
No. AAFGF is a not-for-profit trade organization 501(c)(6) not a non-profit 501(c)(3). Therefore, sponsorships of AAFGF events or programs are not deductible as a charitable contribution, but may be considered an advertising expense. (As always, consult with your tax professional.)
